Let’s get real here—as much as we guys don’t want to admit it, we all want flawless skin. I mean, who doesn’t right? It’s great that a lot of guys are starting to step up their skin care game. The main goal here is to establish a consistent skin care routine that includes cleaning, moisturizing and exfoliating (that works for you). No need to be intimidated nor be embarrassed about the whole idea of investing in skin care products—and no need to steal your sister’s or girlfriend’s stuff.
Now that 2019 is fast approaching, take this as a fresh start and bid bad skin goodbye. At some point in our lives, we all had to deal with acne, oiliness, dryness, huge pores, blackheads, discoloration, etc. While it’s impossible to avoid these, we can take these steps (see below) to minimize and manage them. With that, I am here to share five (5) steps to better skin! These 5 steps and points have worked really well for me over the years.

Before I had no idea how knowing your skin type can actually play a huge role in determining what products suit a person. I used to try every facial wash, regardless if it worked well for me or not. Now I have learned that the first step to perfect skin is to figure out what your skin type is. Everybody’s skin is unique, so what works for another person may not work for you. Take a long hard look at your skin and decide whether it’s normal, sensitive, dry, oily or a combination. I have oily skin. If you have normal skin, that means you’re normal (lol). Your skin doesn’t get oily, your pores are small and you rarely get breakouts (damn you lol). If you have sensitive skin, chances are it may become dry or irritated easily. If you have dry skin, it usually feels tight after cleansing and can suffer from flakiness. If you have oily skin, you become greasy and shiny easily (even just a few hours after cleansing your face). Oily skin is usually prone to breakouts. For combination skin, this means that your skin can be dry and oily. It can look and feel dry in some areas, but oily along the t-zone. Now—what’s your skin type?

Cleansing your face should be the first step in any skin care routine. It is essential as it cleans away dirt, oil and bacteria. Stick to washing your face twice a day—once in the morning to cleanse any oil that has been built up overnight (I always look so oily in the morning lol). Then once in the evening to remove any dirt, oil and bacteria you’ve accumulated during the day. Again, take note of the first point here which is “figure out what your skin type is.” Look for a facial cleanser that works well for your skin type. I have a few favorites that have worked well for me: Kiehl’s Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash, Luxe Organic 99% Aloe Vera Foam Cleanser, Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser.

You might have already heard of the famous FOREO LUNA range from your favorite beauty gurus. I researched about guys using the products and saw quite a few reviews about it. After doing a lot of research about the product, I decided to give it a try. I went for the LUNA mini 2 just because it’s smaller—meaning I can easily bring it for my trips. I first used it on my 3-week trip in Europe. It was the perfect time to test it out as my skin really takes a beating whenever I travel. My skin becomes so dry and it breaks out a lot. For the first week that I used the FOREO LUNA mini 2, I did not really see the effect right away. However I was always so excited to use it because it’s something I’ve never seen before and it’s like playing with a new toy lol. The second week, I really came to appreciate the device and its effect on my skin. My skin felt fresh, clean and plump. This facial cleansing device is suitable for all skin types and has an enhanced T-Sonic face brush with eight adjustable intensities so that you can fully customise your cleansing experience. You’ll also like that it has a three-zone face brush and different size and shaped touch points intended for different functions. The silicone bristles really feel good on the skin—it gives you a nice facial massage which is perfect after a long day. I use my FOREO LUNA mini 2 twice a day, one in the morning then one before I go to bed. I use it for 1 minute to 2 minutes max (when I want a good facial massage lol). Another thing that I like about it is the fact that I don’t have to charge it from time to time. I charged it once before my Eurotrip, 3 months after I still haven’t charged it again, hah!

The FOREO LUNA mini 2 removes dead skin cells, unclogs pores of dirt oil, enhances absorption of skin care products and delivers brighter, more radiant skin. It comes in six (6) colors so you’ll really find something the matches your style. You can get the FOREO LUNA mini 2 over at Sephora.ph. You can also watch my review about it on my YouTube channel here.

It took me a while (meaning years lol) to realize how crucial toners are in the skin care game. I kept hearing about it from my dermatologist but I never listened lol. It’s true that toner is probably the most overlooked product in skincare. A lot of people skip this step because many think it’s not necessary. However, toning has many benefits such as restoring your skin’s pH balance and nourishing your skin. Toners can also help your skin absorb any products like serums, moisturizers and sunscreens that you apply afterwards. There are tons of toners in the market but what has worked for me was Khiel’s Calendula Herbal Extract Alcohol Free Toner. Most toners come in liquid form so make sure you have a supply of cotton pad (miniso has good and cheap ones).

Which brings us to this point. Did you know that our necks can show our age more than our face? So it’s very important to take care of that skin. My dermatologist (shoutout to Facial Care Centre for Men) recommends bringing any products you’re using on your face down to your neck and massaging them in an upward motion to create a “lifting effect.”

There you have it! These are my top five (5) steps to better skin—at least for me. I would add drinking 8 glasses of water and getting plenty of sleep but I don’t practice those so #cantrelate lol. If there’s anything more to add, it would be taking care of your body and watching what you eat! What you put in your body will reflect outside. I hope this somehow helped you step up your skin care game. Cheers to the coming year! Better skin this 2019, yes?
