SETTING GOALS FOR 2017

newyear

Hello 2017! Welcoming the New Year is a chance for us to look back into the previous year, gain new experiences, learn from our mistakes and think hard about what we want to achieve this year. Now I am no resolution maker, but I think the term “goals” is more attainable, do you agree?

This year I am going to make it more specific and more focused on my career. 2016 was an amazing year of reconnecting with old friends, falling in love (yee) and making real connections. I’m glad I was able to do all of these and I would love to continue it for the years to come. This year I’m going to make my goals specific. So by the end of 2017 I would like to hopefully achieve these things:

Publish my own book – Putting this on top of my list because I really want to make it happen this year. I don’t want to rush it and do it for the sake of publishing a book and achieving my goals this year, but it has been my dream to write a self-help style guide or a travel book to be particular. To tell you the truth, I am petrified. Writing a book is something that scares me because it’s an open book (get it lol). Meaning, it is open for criticisms. People will always judge your work. Someone is going to love it, someone is going to hate it–that’s how life works. But then again, have I not been used to this all my blogging life? Every blog post I publish, every tweet I sent out, every Instagram photo I post–are all open to criticisms. So how different can it be from writing my own book? I don’t know. Maybe just the thought of it being accessible for everyone, people will come across it, people who are not even my readers/followers. I think that’s the scary part. But like I said a million times on the blog, you always need to be nervous in order to succeed in life. Do something that isn’t comfortable for you. Do something that scares you.

Fit into my old jeans again – F it, I’m not going to be ambitious with my fitness goals this time. I used to always say to myself every start of the year, “I will look my best this year.” Then I go to the gym thrice a week, watch what I eat, and see results. Then days after summer (end of Boracay Labor Day weekend to be particular lol), I lose all my drive and go back to that extra rice diet, eating desserts like crazy and not fitting into my clothes anymore. It’s a vicious cycle. Especially now that I launched my Youtube channel, there is no way I will be able to hide that from the camera. Haha! So this year I will try to get a personal trainer to help me with my fitness goals this year. I just need to fit into my old pair of jeans (30), that’s it! I’m currently a size 34 (don’t judge me lol) so I need to shed a couple of pounds and be able to post those OOTDs with confidence. Haha! I can do this!

Work with brands I genuinely love – I am grateful for all the brands/companies I was able to work with for the past couple of years. H&M, Forever 21, Lacoste, Ford, Tommy Hilfiger, Fujifilm, Philippine Airlines, etc. All of these were just dreams before. When I started blogging in 2009, I made a list of all the brands I wanted to work with. I just wrote it at the back of my notebook, then every time I would be given the opportunity to work with one of my dreams brands/companies, I would cross that out from my list. I can’t find that particular notebook anymore (lol) but I remember each and every brand/company in my head. I have worked with a lot of brands, some brands I truly love, some I knew nothing about. I did not do it for the money, but because I always want to be challenged. If I was going to work with a brand I love, then it’s going to be easy for me to create content for it. But to work with a brand I know nothing about or a brand that is not in line with my field of interests, that’s where the challenge comes in. And I love being challenged. This year I’m going to say yes to the brands I genuinely love and support–and give my 110 percent.

Hit 50,000 YouTube subscribers – A little far-fetched, but a guy can dream right? I started my YouTube channel last July and I couldn’t be happier. I’ve always wanted to put up one but I am so awkward in front of the camera, I didn’t think I would be able to pull it off. I would be usually a crazy, funny guy offline, but when I start filming, I’m a completely different person. I’m glad I was able to go past that and I’m more myself in my recent videos. I also got to hone my skills in video editing. I enjoyed it so much that I wouldn’t take any breaks in between editing. I was always ~in the zone~ haha! My YouTube is only 5 months old, and it only has 4,000+ subscribers. I met up with Wil Dasovich (a.k.a. the king of vlogging here in The Philippines) and he told me that it took him a year to gain 10,000 subscribers. Look at him now, he has over 200,000 and he’s the best at what he does. This year I am going to create more content, hopefully about style tips, hair tutorials, more of my travels, daily vlogs, random challenges, etc. I’m going to make it a goal to hit 50,000 subscribers this year. Why not?

Update the blog regularly – With the rise of Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter, I think it’s safe to say that blogs are dying. People want information fast, so they go to Instagram or Snapchat to get real-time information. A blog post, however, takes hours (or days) to work on. This is a little disheartening for bloggers like me because blogging is our way of life, it is how we make a living and something we are truly passionate about. So to see fewer visitors, fewer engagements/comments/interactions, it doesn’t inspire us as much as before. But this year my goal is to bring back the fire in blogging. Blogging used to be so great in 2010-2012, those where the times when I would share something so random, and it would get so many comments/interactions. I will be going to keep posting quality content regularly, regardless if it gets hundreds of comments or none at all.

Travel more – How predictable right? Haha! Last 2016 was an amazing year of travel. This year I’d like to be more specific with my dream travel destinations this year: Thailand (Phuket), New Zealand, Australia, Morocco, Czech Republic, Greece, South Africa and Peru. Gotta work extra hard this year to be able to cross out a few of these destinations!

How about you? What are your goals this 2017? I suggest you think about it hard and make it specific. It could be something so big or something so little. It doesn’t matter. Have an amazing year ahead. Cheers.
