I’ve been getting a lot of emails from my readers asking me how I style my hair. So here it is! I teamed up with Gatsby and Famous Salon to help me come up with different hairstyles! I know not everyone has curly/wavy hair like mine so we tried a bunch of different looks.
As superficial as it may sound, it affects my mood whenever I have a bad hair day. I guess it affects my confidence as well. You can say that my hair is my security blanket. Can you guys relate? Haha! I end up having a bad day whenever I have a bad hair day. Coincidence? I think not! lol
So this is how my hair looks like after shower. Haha! For the first hairstyle, I’m showing you guys how I usually do my hair–the textured pompadour! I have natural wavy hair so it’s easier for me to style it and achieve volume. I towel dry my hair so that I don’t lose the waves and curls.
I tried Gatsby’s new product, The Gatsby Moving Rubber for this hair tutorial! Yes, you guys won’t have to hoard in Japan, Singapore or shop online anymore because it’s finally here! Gatsby Moving Rubber has a special rubber formula which allows you to restyle you hair as many times as you want. Some hair products gives off this chemical smell but I love the fact that the Moving Rubber has this refreshing fresh green apple scent! Yay! There are 6 variants so I decided to come up with 6 different hairstyles to test out each wax/gel!
Grunge Mat: this wax is best known for its matte texture with a reduced gloss. Along with its high styling strength and excellent holding power, Grunge Mat lets you create hair bundles easily. Use this variant if you want to prevent your hairstyle from appearing flat.
After drying your hair with a towel, apply a pea-sized amount of wax on your palm. Don’t use too much as it will weigh your hair down (you can always add more later). Smooth it to your hair until it is evenly distributed. The key to achieving this hairstyle is to have the top part “fluffy” but keeping the sides and the back flat. You want to create texture and movement so do this by rubbing the product into the middle of the hair bundles to stagger the look.
There you have it! For this hairstyle, it takes me less than 2 minutes or less to style it. Don’t spend too much time and effort on it because you want it to look effortless! Haha! Since I only know one hairstyle, I asked the stylists of Famous Salon to help me come up with five more styles!
Air Rise: Unlike other hard wax products, Air Rise leaves a light/soft finish on the hair. You guys can use this to create a feathered look without spending too much time and effort. Air Rise’s best feature is its ability to create an “airy or feathered style” giving the look of lightness and softness. Like putting air into the hair!
This would have to be my personal favorite hairstyle! The stylist curled my hair so it created more volume. To create an airy or feathered look with a natural bounce, section your hair and apply a small amount of product to each and twist in the direction you wish to achieve the desired effect. To create more volume, pretend like you’re pulling your hair (haha I’m serious). Make sure to apply and blend product equally into hair. To achieve your desired look, the key is to apply swiftly and evenly. Same with the first hairstyle, keep the sides and back flat.
Spiky Edge: is the hardest wax of the Moving Rubber series. Its excellent holding power keeps hair spiked and in place so you can move through your day with effortless style. It is designed to enhance movement even in short hair. I also heard that this variant is the best seller in Japan!
Apply small dab onto the palm of your hand. Rub hands together spreading evenly until transparent. Try to also get it between your fingers. Spiky Edge has a strong setting power, so work into hair as quickly as possible by running your fingers through your hair like a comb.
I feel like a Jonas Brother! Haha! Can I pull off bangs? I call it the “emo na kulot” look! Haha! This is something out of my comfort zone but I’m open to the idea! This hairstyle still has a bit of shine and volume even if it is styled down. Okay, moving on to the next hairstyle!
Cool Wet: This non-sticky, non-greasy formula was designed uniquely to create a wet look with a shiny finish. Once applied, restyling becomes easy. The Cool Wet product creates a moveable texture while still maintaining your desired hold. For this variant, we’re doing the slick and shiny look. This style requires straight, well-conditioned hair and styling powers in order to achieve that ‘polished’ effect.
Okay so I know not all of you guys have wavy hair, so here’s a hairstyle that could work for guys with straight hair. Spread gel on the palms of the hands and rub product on your fingertips. Because it’s a wet-type agent, use two or more fingers to scoop out a moderate amount. Run your fingers through your hair. Blend from the roots to the tips of your hair. Add product in several stages until your entire hair has an evenly applied wet-look gloss. You can use a comb to keep it clean and sleek. Now you can part your hair to the side. Then comb the hair on top to the side making sure to leave the very front lifted. Then flatten the sides backwards.
*Excuse my forehead* Tada! This hairstyle looks clean, polished and sophisticated. What do you guys think of this one?
Wild Shake: This variant has the second strongest setting power but goes on smoothly to create a spiky, three-dimensional look. It adds a natural gloss to your hair and produces the moveable texture you desire.
To all the goths and emo kids out there, this hairstyle is for you! LOL. Start off by drying your hair with a towel until it is damp before using a blow dryer and paddle brush to get a smooth finish. Rub a small amount of wax between your palms and distribute it evenly throughout the hair, using your fingers like a comb to help separate chunks and add texture. This look needs a lot of movement so don’t fix the style in place by overloading the hair with product. Don’t apply too much wax or it will get heavy. If you apply too much, you can’t go back. So just apply a little bit at a time.
Loose Shuffle: This is what I use everyday! This variant creates beautiful curls in no time. Gatsby’s stylists recommend you make the maximum use of Loose Shuffle’s features by creating the “curly style” seen in permed or curly/wavy hair.
For the last one, I spontaneously got a haircut! Haha! The “undercut” is a really popular hairstyle right now. This hairstyle is suitable for those with angular features. Now before you get an undercut, ask your hairdresser if this haircut will work for your hair or the shape of your face. If you have hair that grows fast, you will need to have the undercut trimmed every two weeks for maintenance. This haircut suits most of the hair types, preferably wavy, medium-curly, or straight hair. I personally love this one because it makes my face look skinny. lol
It is quite easy to style the undercut. Only the long hair demands your styling skills. Undercuts look particularly attractive when the top hair has a lot of volume and shine. You can achieve this look by pushing the hair up and over to one side using your hands or a comb. The trick is to apply product by inserting fingers beneath hair and not tousling too much.
The characteristic feature of the undercut is the short side hair and the longer top hair. This high-volume look is mature, suave and suitable for almost any occasion. If hair starts to look too much like a helmet as it is dries, then run your fingers through the top to break it up a little and re-define the side parting. There you have it!
Here are the final looks!
What do you guys think? Which hairstyle would you rock? I personally like hairstyle #2 (Air Rise) and #6 (Loose Shuffle) best (anyare sa #5? Haha!). Big thanks to Bryan, Rico and Irish of Famous Salon Greenhills for helping me out with these looks! Didn’t realize there are tons of different hairstyles one could try!
What’s your favorite variant? Comment on this post and let me know! Hope you guys enjoyed this hair tutorial! Go ahead and try them yourself!
